Ingredients

For the skillet:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small sweet onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

For the cabbage and finish:

  • 1 small green cabbage, roughly chopped
  • 1 can fire-roasted diced tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup beef or chicken broth
  • 1 1/4 cups shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese
  • Chopped parsley, for garnish
  • Red pepper flakes, optional

Instructions

  • 1)

Make sure to carefully follow each step of the instructions for the best results :

    • Brown the beef.
Heat the olive oil in a large, wide skillet or braiser over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef along with the garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Cook for about 5 minutes, breaking the meat into crumbles, until nicely browned. Browning the beef well at the start gives the whole skillet deeper, more satisfying flavor.
    • Build the flavor base.
Add the onion to the skillet and cook for 2 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard, then cook for another minute so everything caramelizes slightly. Tomato paste and Worcestershire are common flavor builders in cheeseburger-style skillet dinners.
    • Add the cabbage.
Pour in the diced tomatoes and broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Stir in the chopped cabbage and mix well to combine. Bring the liquid to a gentle simmer, then cook uncovered for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender.
    • Melt the cheese.
Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the top of the skillet. Cover with a lid and let the cheese melt for 2 to 3 minutes. For a bubblier, golden finish, place an oven-safe skillet under the broiler for 1 to 3 minutes, watching closely.
    • Serve warm.
Scatter chopped parsley and red pepper flakes over the top if using, and serve the skillet hot straight from the pan. This dinner is filling enough on its own, but it pairs well with a simple side salad if you want something extra on the table.
